First opened in 1899 as a branch of London's Royal Mint, the Perth Mint was originally established in response to the discovery of vast gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Prospectors from around the world, who flocked to the region in the hopes of striking it rich, brought their gold ore to the Perth Mint to be refined and struck into coins.
